In June 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted a Recommendation to initiate a European approach to microcredentials as a viable and valid methodology for certifying lifelong learning and employability strategies in the EU.
This Recommendation aims to support the development, implementation, and recognition of microcredentials across institutions, businesses and sectors throughout all member states.
The UK has been actively promoting the use of microcredentials through initiatives such as the National Skills Fund and the Lifetime Skills Guarantee. The European Union has also emphasised the importance of microcredentials in its agenda for upskilling and reskilling the workforce.
Efforts are being made to establish quality assurance frameworks, such as the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), to ensure consistency and comparability of microcredentials across countries. The recognition of microcredentials as valuable qualifications is seen as a way to improve employability and foster continuous professional development in both the UK and the EU.
