LEARNING MODEL
What you’ll experience
Speak with an Enrolment Advisor to assess your experience and identify the track that best matches your skills, so you start at the right level.
Meet your Success Manager and Career Coach, set your goals and prepare for the journey ahead.
Progress through the courses that match your experience, building production-ready AI systems with practical projects, expert guidance and industry-standard tools.
Every track leads to the same destination: AI engineer.
Work on a real employer brief to design, build and present a production AI application. Graduate with a portfolio that proves what you can build.
Work one-to-one with a Career Coach to strengthen your portfolio, prepare for interviews and build a strategy for your next career move.
Earn a university certificate that demonstrates your commitment, alongside a portfolio of practical projects that show employers how you apply your skills in practice.
Join our Alumni groups to continue learning, build your network and discover new opportunities throughout your career.
CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
What you’ll learn
The programme is built from three sequential courses and a four-week Employer Capstone. You enter at the course that matches your experience, and every track converges at the capstone.
Entry point for Track 1. You arrive unable to code confidently and leave able to build, deploy and explain a working AI application that calls a language-model interface, handles real data, connects to external services and is tested, documented and deployed.
20-hour Python primer + 8 weeks. The spine is a single application, built in week one and developed every week after. Nothing is thrown away. AI tools are collaborators from day one, and the discipline is verification: you use AI to build faster, but you must be able to read, test, debug and own everything it produced.
You finish with a tested, documented, deployed AI application as your Course 1 portfolio piece, and confirmation that you can reason about code independently.
Entry point for Track 2. You arrive able to code but not yet engineering software to a production standard, and leave writing production-quality code and building and deploying retrieval and agent systems to a professional standard, ready for the depth of Course 3.
12 weeks. The course closes the gap between writing code and engineering software, then introduces the core AI engineering patterns, retrieval and agents, taught with the rigour they demand. The spine is a new, more ambitious application built in week one and engineered and extended across all twelve weeks. For Track 1 learners arriving from Course 1, the early weeks build on what came before at higher stakes.
You finish with a complete, documented, production-ready application as your Course 2 portfolio piece, and a final individual assessment in interview format: debugging a flawed component and talking through your trade-off decisions.
Entry point for Track 3, and the centrepiece of the programme. You arrive a production software engineer and leave able to architect, build, harden, evaluate, govern and operate complex AI systems in production.
12 weeks. The model changes here: you design a production AI system in week one and return to that design every week, deepening it, hardening it and stress-testing it. The question shifts from “can you build this” to “should you build it this way, and how do you know”. This reflects how senior AI engineers actually work. The programme is explicitly focused on language-model-based AI engineering, the dominant paradigm for production AI in 2026.
You finish with an architecture a team could build from, a costed and hardened system, and a governance document of the kind a legal or compliance team would review.
All three tracks converge at the employer capstone. You build a production AI system to a real employer brief and are assessed both individually and as a team.
Every learner presents key decisions from the capstone and talks it through with employer partners with the same kind of rigour you will meet in AI engineering hiring, practised before you get there.
OUR EXPERTS
Who you’ll learn from
Learn from University of Cambridge academics, experienced AI engineering practitioners and dedicated career experts who combine academic rigour with real-world industry experience.
Cambridge academics & AI practitioners
Learn from Cambridge faculty and experienced AI professionals who design and deliver a curriculum aligned to the latest industry practice.
Facilitators & Success Managers
Stay on track with live guidance, weekly Q&A sessions and personalised support as you build production-ready AI systems.
Career coaches
Work one-to-one with a Career Coach to strengthen your portfolio, prepare for interviews and accelerate your career as an AI engineer.
Graduate with proof of what you can do
Employers increasingly look beyond certificates.
Finish with a Cambridge University certificate and a production AI application built for a real employer. Leave with proof you can build AI systems, not just talk about them.
