How to Break Into Tech Without a Tech Background

Most people trying to work out how to get into tech assume the door is only open to computer science graduates and 22-year-old engineers. If you’ve spent eight, ten or fifteen years building expertise in marketing, sales, teaching, HR or hospitality, it’s easy to think none of that counts.

That assumption is wrong, and increasingly out of date. The people thriving in tech now are usually career changers with a strong first chapter somewhere else entirely.

Tech in 2026 is not one career. It’s six or seven distinct disciplines, among them product management, UX and UI design, digital marketing, data analytics, data science, AI leadership and cybersecurity, each valuing commercial judgement and communication as much as code, and each open to people who built their first career somewhere else.

What tech actually looks like in the UK in 2026 (reality check)

Start with the numbers, because they explain why this door is opening rather than closing. UK tech employs around 2 million IT specialists, of whom 441,000 are women. Data roles alone have 178,000 to 234,000 unfilled positions, costing the UK economy roughly £57 billion a year in lost output.

AI-linked roles are growing around 32% year on year, and 61% of product manager job postings now ask for AI experience. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects that AI and information processing will affect 86% of businesses by 2030, and that 39% of core skills across all roles will change. Put plainly: employers are short of skilled people, and what counts as “skilled” has shifted away from a computer science degree towards applied capability.

One caveat. Junior engineering roles are competitive and tend to go to CS graduates, so that isn’t where a career changer should aim. The high-value, harder-to-fill roles combine technical fluency with business judgement, and those reward the experience you already have. Why tech is not just engineering (the biggest myth to drop)

This is the myth worth dropping first. The step-by-step route in, once you’ve picked your lane

Step 1. Confirm the lane fits by talking to people already in it

Before investing six months, talk to three or four people already doing the job (LinkedIn outreach, Reddit threads and open-day webinars are enough). Ask what their Monday morning looks like, and what they wish they’d known. It costs nothing, and saves you from learning the wrong lane.

How long does it take, and can I do this while working?

There are three realistic routes: fully self-taught, a bootcamp, or a university-backed career accelerator. 

On a structured programme, six to seven months of focused effort, around 15 to 20 hours a week alongside a full-time job, is the standard route to a job-ready portfolio and credential. 

Bootcamps compress the timeline but usually skip the credential and the employer brief. 

Self-teaching can work, but it takes longer and gives sceptical hiring managers no independent signal of credibility.
